- Q: All terms of an arithmetic sequence of natural numbers with common difference 7 are divided by 7. What do you notice about the remainders?
- A: They are all the same, because the difference between any two terms is a multiple of 7.
- Q: What is an arithmetic sequence?
- A: A sequence in which the difference between any term and its previous term is always the same. Example: 3, 7, 11, 15, \ldots (each term is 4 more than the one before).
- Q: What is the common difference of an arithmetic sequence?
- A: The fixed number added to each term to get the next one. Find it by subtracting any term from the next: in 10, 13, 16, \ldots it is 13 - 10 = 3.
- Q: Find the common difference of 5, 8, 11, 14, \ldots
- A: d = 8 - 5 = 3. Check: 11 - 8 = 3 and 14 - 11 = 3. So d = 3.
- Q: To get the nth term from the 1st term, how many times is the common difference added?
- A: n - 1 times, because the position increases from 1 to n. E.g. to reach the 5th term, add it 5 - 1 = 4 times.
