Q: Define mechanical advantage (MA).
A: Mechanical advantage is the ratio of the load (output force) to the effort (input force): MA = Load / Effort. It has no unit.
Q: What is a lever?
A: A lever is a rigid bar that can turn freely about a fixed point called the fulcrum. It is used to lift loads or overcome resistance by applying an effort.
Q: Name the three parts (points) of a lever.
A: The three points of a lever are the fulcrum (F, the pivot), the load (L, the resistance to be overcome) and the effort (E, the force applied).
Q: What is a first order lever? Give an example.
A: In a first order lever the fulcrum is between the load and the effort. Examples: common balance, scissors, seesaw, crowbar. Its MA can be greater than, equal to or less than 1.
