- (a) Calculate the mechanical advantage of the plank used as an inclined plane.
- (b) What is the least effort needed along the plank? Will using a 9 m plank make the job easier or harder?
- (A) The figure shows how the air pressure varies with distance along a sound wave at one instant. P and Q are two neighbouring points of maximum pressure, 0.68 m apart. The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s. [2 marks]
- (a) Find the frequency of the sound. Can a human hear it?
- (b) If the frequency of the source is doubled, what will be the new wavelength in the same air?
OR
(B) A radio set picks up only the station whose frequency matches the frequency to which its circuit is tuned.
- Ammu's 68-year-old grandfather could read easily when he was younger. Now he still sees distant buses clearly, but he cannot read a newspaper held 25 cm from his eyes. His near point has moved to 60 cm. This defect has developed with age. [2 marks]
- (a) Name this defect of vision. What causes it?

Section C
Questions 12–17 carry 3 scores each. Questions 14 and 17 have a choice — answer (A) or (B).
