Questions 12–17 carry 3 scores each. Questions 14 and 17 have a choice — answer (A) or (B).

  1. An object is placed 30 cm in front of a concave lens of focal length 15 cm. [3 marks]
    • (a) Find the position of the image.
    • (b) Find the magnification and state the nature of the image.
    • (c) Calculate the power of the lens.
  2. Electricity generated at 11 kV in a power station is stepped up to 220 kV before it is sent through long transmission lines. [3 marks]
    • (a) Why is the voltage stepped up for transmission?
    • (b) The step-up transformer has 500 turns in its primary. How many turns are there in its secondary?
    • (c) If the current in the primary is 400 A, what is the current in the secondary? (Assume no power loss.)
  3. (A) In a house, the following are used every day: an electric iron of 1000 W for 1 hour, four 9 W LED bulbs for 6 hours, and two 60 W fans for 10 hours. [3 marks]
    • (a) Calculate the electric energy consumed in one day, in units.
    • (b) Find the consumption for 30 days.
    • (c) The two fans are replaced with 28 W BLDC fans used for the same time. How many units are saved in 30 days?

    (B) Heating appliances work on the heating effect of electric current.

  4. A simple DC motor has an armature coil ABCD placed between the poles N and S of a magnet, split rings R1 and R2, and graphite brushes B1 and B2 connected to a battery. [3 marks]
    • (a) What energy change takes place in the motor? On what principle does it work?
    • (b) What is the function of the split rings?
    • (c) Write two ways to make the motor rotate faster.
  5. A narrow beam of white light falls on one face of a glass prism and a band of colours is seen on a screen. [3 marks]
    • (a) Name the phenomenon. Which colour bends the most?
    • (b) Why do the colours separate?
    • (c) A second identical prism is placed upside down in the path of the coloured band. What will be seen on the screen? Why?
  6. (A) Meera stands 85 m in front of a tall wall and claps. (Speed of sound in air = 340 m/s.) [3 marks]
    • (a) What is the minimum distance from a reflecting surface needed to hear a distinct echo in this air?
    • (b) After how much time does she hear the echo?
    • (c) She claps at a steady rate so that each clap coincides with the echo of the previous clap. How many claps does she make per minute?

    (B) A bat emits ultrasonic waves of frequency 50 kHz. (Speed of sound in air = 340 m/s.)

Section D

Question 18 carries 4 scores. Answer (A) or (B).

  1. (A) Observe the figure. A metre scale is pivoted at its 50 cm mark and stays horizontal. A 60 g mass hangs at the 20 cm mark and an unknown mass m hangs at the 90 cm mark. [4 marks]
    • (a) State the principle of a lever.
    • (b) Calculate the mass m.
    • (c) Which order of lever is this? Can its mechanical advantage be less than 1?
    • (d) Why is the mechanical advantage of a second order lever, such as a wheelbarrow, always greater than 1?

    OR

    (B) A second system of pulleys has 2 pulleys in the upper block and 2 pulleys in the lower block, with a single rope passing round all of them. It is used to lift a load of 1200 N.
