Sample questions

Q: What is sound?
A: Sound is a form of energy produced by vibrating bodies that travels through a material medium as a wave and produces the sensation of hearing.
Q: Why can sound not travel through vacuum?
A: Sound needs a material medium (solid, liquid or gas) to travel because it propagates through vibrations of the particles of the medium. A vacuum has no particles, so sound cannot pass through it.
Q: What kind of wave is a sound wave?
A: Sound is a longitudinal wave, in which the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the same direction in which the wave travels.
Q: What are compressions and rarefactions?
A: Compressions are regions where the particles of the medium are crowded together (high pressure); rarefactions are regions where the particles are spread apart (low pressure). A sound wave travels as alternate compressions and rarefactions.
Q: Define the frequency of a sound wave and give its unit.
A: Frequency is the number of vibrations (or waves) produced in one second. Its SI unit is the hertz (Hz).
