Q: What is a lens?
A: A lens is a transparent optical medium (usually glass) bounded by two surfaces, at least one of which is curved (spherical). It refracts light to form images.
Q: Distinguish between a convex lens and a concave lens.
A: A convex lens is thicker at the middle and thinner at the edges and converges light (converging lens). A concave lens is thinner at the middle and thicker at the edges and diverges light (diverging lens).
Q: What is the optic centre of a lens?
A: The optic centre (O) is the midpoint of a lens. A ray of light passing through the optic centre goes straight without any deviation.
Q: What is the optic axis of a lens?
A: The optic axis is the imaginary line passing through the centres of curvature and the optic centre of a lens.
Q: Define the principal focus of a convex lens.
A: Light rays near and parallel to the optic axis, after refraction through a convex lens, converge at a point on the optic axis on the other side. This point is the principal focus (F). It is real.
